What the work involves
This listing is an intake survey, not a project offer. You'll spend roughly 30 minutes writing about the mechanics of your own accounting practice: how your week actually splits between fieldwork, review, client communication, and cleanup; which systems and workpaper tools you live in; where judgment enters and where it's mostly procedure. Mercor also asks how insiders actually partition the profession — the cuts practitioners use when deciding who can staff what, rather than the textbook divisions of audit / tax / advisory — and what parts of the job are invisible to someone reading a job description or a Big Four service catalog.
The purpose is upstream design. Mercor is preparing engagements with AI labs across audit reasoning, financial reporting, tax, and GAAP/IFRS analysis, and wants the task structures, difficulty ranges, and specialty tags to reflect real practice before scoping is locked. Detail beats polish here: a specific description of how you resolve a revenue recognition question under ASC 606 with incomplete contract documentation is worth more than a general statement that you handle complex revenue matters.
What the platform screens for
- Verifiable practice history — where you practiced, at what level, on what client types and industries, and how recently.
- Credential and standards fluency — CPA or equivalent is preferred; unlicensed candidates with deep in-house or specialist experience are considered, but standards knowledge (US GAAP, IFRS, PCAOB/AICPA audit standards, or IRC subchapters) should be concrete.
- Specificity under follow-up — AI-led screens typically push one layer deeper on whatever you volunteer, so choose examples you can actually unpack.
- Evaluation instincts — whether you can articulate why an answer is wrong, not just that it is.
Logistics
Fully remote and asynchronous; you complete the written intake on your own schedule. There is no interview panel, no client work, and no ongoing time commitment attached to the intake itself. Downstream engagements, if you're matched, are typically part-time and flexible — often 5–20 hours per week — with observed accounting rates on the platform in the $80–120/hr range, scaling with seniority and specialty scarcity. Rates are as observed and not guaranteed.
