What the work involves
You are handed a model's answer to a finance question — a DCF build, a revenue-recognition treatment, a credit memo, a rates or FX explanation — and asked to say whether it is right, where exactly it goes wrong, and what the correct reasoning is. Much of the work is the reverse direction too: authoring problems hard enough that current models fail them, with a defensible gold answer and a rubric someone else can apply consistently. Tasks arrive in batches through micro1's platform and tend to cluster by specialty (corporate finance, financial accounting, capital markets, quant, FP&A, banking regulation), so you generally stay near the area you claimed in screening.
The skill that matters most is not knowing the answer — it is explaining the failure. "Wrong terminal value" is not useful feedback; "used a perpetuity growth rate above the risk-free rate, and applied it to unlevered FCF while discounting at cost of equity" is. Reviewers read your rationales, and consistency between your grades and your written reasoning is tracked.
What the platform screens for
- Verifiable credentials and history: CFA, CPA, MBA in finance, or a track record in IB, PE, equity research, corporate FP&A, or a quant seat. Expect to name firms, coverage, deal or model types.
- Depth under follow-up. micro1's screen is AI-led and conversational; it will push a second and third question on whatever you assert. Vague answers surface fast.
- Written precision, since your output is prose reasoning, not checkboxes.
- Judgment on ambiguity: how you handle answers that are defensible under a different standard, convention, or assumption set.
Logistics
Fully remote, asynchronous, contractor engagement with no fixed shifts. Most contributors treat it as 5–20 hours a week and choose their own hours; work volume is project-driven and arrives unevenly, so it complements a primary role rather than replacing one. Rates are hourly, quoted at offer, and vary within the band by specialty scarcity — the observed $100–200/hr range is what contributors have reported, not a guarantee.
