The work

You spend your hours in two modes. In the first, you author prompts in Spanish across sensitive subject areas — the kind of requests a model should decline, handle carefully, or answer with caveats. Good prompts are not slurs typed into a box; they are realistic, culturally situated, and probe the edge where a model's refusal behaviour breaks down. That includes regional register (a phrasing that reads as clinical in Madrid and as threatening in Monterrey), indirection, roleplay framing, and code-switching between Spanish and English mid-conversation.

In the second mode you classify. Someone hands you a taxonomy — categories, severity levels, decision rules — and you apply it to prompts and multi-turn conversations, then write out why. The written rationale matters as much as the label. Reviewers use it to find where the guideline itself is ambiguous, and inconsistent labelling across a batch is the fastest way to lose the contract.

What the screen looks for

Mercor's process is AI-led: a recorded conversational interview, sometimes a short written or annotation sample. It is testing Spanish fluency at a native or near-native level (including regional awareness, not just grammar), whether your written English is clear enough for rationales a US-based safety team will read, and your judgment on dual-use material — can you describe a harm category precisely without producing the harmful content itself. Expect follow-ups that push on a single answer two or three times. Vague answers collapse under that; specific ones don't.

Logistics

  • Remote, asynchronous, project-based — you pull tasks from a queue rather than sit in meetings.
  • No AI/ML background required; workflow training is provided.
  • A bachelor's degree, completed or in progress, is stated as a requirement.
  • Spain or wider Western Europe is a stated preference only; applicants elsewhere are explicitly welcome.
  • Immediate start. Hours are typically flexible, but sustained weekly availability (often 10–20+ hrs) is what keeps work flowing. Pay observed at $43–47/hr, not guaranteed.
