What the work involves

Projects sourced through this network vary, but the underlying tasks are consistent: writing chemistry problems that frontier models fail, grading model outputs against what a working chemist would actually accept, and explaining precisely where a mechanism, spectrum interpretation, or stoichiometric calculation goes wrong. Some engagements ask for original task authoring — a plausible bench scenario with a defensible answer key and distractors that catch surface pattern-matching. Others are pure evaluation: ranking two model responses, flagging hallucinated citations or invented reagents, and writing rationales terse enough to be usable as training signal.

The domains requested most often are analytical chemistry (chromatography, mass spec, NMR interpretation), reaction mechanism and synthetic route planning, chemical safety and handling judgment, and quantitative data analysis. Depth in one area beats shallow coverage of all four.

What the platform screens for

  • Verifiable background. Resume, degrees, employer or institution, and work location. Mercor checks credentials before approving network membership.
  • Domain depth under follow-up. The AI interview asks a chemistry question, then presses on your answer. Vague or textbook-recited responses fail; specific technique choices with stated reasoning pass.
  • Evaluation judgment. Can you distinguish a confidently wrong answer from a correct one written awkwardly? That distinction is the job.
  • Written clarity. Nearly all deliverables are text. Rationales that a reviewer can't follow have no value.

Logistics

Fully remote and largely asynchronous. Typical project commitments run 15–30 hours per week, self-scheduled, with duration set per engagement. Observed rates for chemistry work on this platform fall in the $60–80/hr range, though actual rates are set per project and are not guaranteed by this application. Note that joining the network is not a job offer — approval makes you eligible for matching, and separate project interviews may follow. Match timing depends entirely on lab demand for your subfield.
