The work

Each task pairs an image with a caption an AI model wrote about it. Your job is narrower than general caption review: you are checking the text rendered inside the image. That means station signs, product packaging, restaurant menus, handwritten notes, app screenshots, warning labels, vertical text on banners. You read what is actually there, character by character, then decide whether the caption's rendering of it is correct, wrong, or silently missing.

The common defect classes you will log:

  • Misreads — visually similar kana or kanji swapped (ソ/ン, シ/ツ, 未/末), or an OCR-style hallucination of a plausible but absent word
  • Mistranslations — the characters were read correctly but rendered into English wrongly, including wrong readings of a name or place
  • Omissions — text clearly legible in the image that the caption never mentions
  • Fabrications — caption asserts text the image does not contain
  • Partial reads — only the largest line of a multi-line sign was captured

Every defect needs the exact wording quoted from the image, plus what the caption said instead. Vague reports like "sign is wrong" get sent back.

What the screen looks for

Mercor's screening is AI-led and follow-up heavy. Expect it to test whether your Japanese is genuinely native-level rather than advanced-learner — questions about ambiguous readings, name readings, stylised or handwritten forms, and the difference between a defensible reading and a guess. It also tests judgment: when the caption is arguably right, when a small imprecision is worth flagging, and when to mark an image illegible rather than invent a reading. Your English writing is assessed directly from your answers, since all reports are written in English.

Logistics

Fully remote and asynchronous, work pulled from a queue when you have time. Observed pay for this listing is $30/hr; rates and volume vary by batch and are not guaranteed. Throughput matters less than accuracy here, but sustained availability — a predictable handful of hours per week — is what keeps work flowing to you.
