What the work involves
Most of your week is spent producing and reviewing evaluation material rather than doing insurance work directly. You write instruction specs that define what a correct answer looks like for a given insurance task, produce the golden solution yourself, and then judge whether model outputs or contractor-written tasks meet that bar. The failure mode you are hired to catch is the answer that reads fluently and cites the right vocabulary but rests on a flawed reserving assumption, a misread exclusion, or a coverage conclusion no claims manager would sign. You will also design new benchmark tasks — the kind that separate a model that has memorised terminology from one that can actually reason through a pricing or adjudication problem — and sit in calibration sessions with researchers and experts in adjacent domains to keep standards consistent.
What the screen looks for
The platform screen is looking for a practicing specialist, not a generalist who has read about insurance. Expect follow-ups that push past your title into the specifics: which lines you priced, what reserve you owned, how you handled a disputed coverage position, what regulatory framework governed your reserving. Credentials are checked directly — an actuarial credential (FSA, ASA, FCAS, ACAS) or an active state license in adjusting, underwriting, or broking. Screeners also probe AI fluency as something you have actually used at work, and they probe your written precision, since almost every deliverable here is a written artifact someone else must be able to apply without asking you what you meant.
Logistics, honestly stated
- Not remote. Hybrid, Bay Area based, on-site with the client's team multiple days a week when required. If you are not already local you must relocate at your own cost; no relocation assistance.
- Full-time W-2 with Cincinnatus LLC as employer of record, placed at the client as extended workforce. Not freelance, not task-piecework.
- 40 hours per week, initial engagement of 6 months.
- Client-issued equipment and accounts; work happens inside the client's internal tooling.
The $60–100/hr band reflects rates observed on comparable Mercor domain-expert placements and is not a guarantee; actual offers turn on credential, specialization, and seniority.
