What the work actually involves

You write and grade underwriting artifacts, not prose about underwriting. A typical task starts with you constructing a plausible submission — account characteristics, occupancy or class code, jurisdiction, limits requested, five years of loss runs, an inspection report with open recommendations — and then producing the work product an experienced underwriter would generate from it: an assessment, a quote rationale with pricing and terms, an information request, a declination letter, or a renewal strategy with risk-improvement requirements. That becomes the "golden" reference. You then grade model attempts on the same file against a rubric covering technical accuracy, consistency, risk differentiation, and adherence to stated guidelines, and write feedback the research team can act on.

The failure modes you are hunting are specific: a model that accepts a risk without asking for the missing COPE data, that prices two materially different accounts identically, that misuses a term like "occurrence," "additional insured," or "SIR," that declines on grounds no guideline supports, or that quietly assumes an inspection finding was remediated. Naming the defect and citing what in the file contradicts it is the whole job.

What the screen looks for

  • Verifiable line-of-business depth — which segment, which carrier or MGA context, what authority level and limits you actually held
  • Whether you can reason from account facts to a decision out loud, and revise cleanly when the follow-up changes a fact
  • Clean separation of the underwriter's seat from the claims adjuster's, the broker's, and the actuary's
  • Written output that reads like a file note: specific, sourced to the submission, no hedging filler

Logistics

Fully remote and asynchronous, with onboarding office hours and periodic calibration sessions you are expected to attend. Minimum 20 hours per week; 40+ is preferred and tends to get more work routed to you. Pay is observed at $800 per task and is not guaranteed — task scope, length, and volume vary by workstream, and rates reported by other contributors are not a promise of yours. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis and the role starts immediately.
