What the work actually is

You write the problem, then you write the answer that should have been given. A task might be a rate indication on a commercial auto book where trend and development assumptions are deliberately arguable, a reserve review with a loss triangle that shows a distorted tail, or a portfolio diagnostic where concentration and cat exposure pull against a profitability story. You produce the work product an experienced actuary would produce — the exhibit, the assumption set, the caveats, the recommendation — and that becomes the reference the model is scored against.

The second half is grading. You score model outputs against structured rubrics covering mathematical accuracy, assumption quality, methodology, interpretation, and communication, and you write the note explaining why the answer failed. The failures that matter most are the plausible ones: a Bornhuetter-Ferguson applied where the a priori is stale, credibility weighting with no stated complement, a trend selection with no support, or a management recommendation that reads well and isn't in the data. Correlation dressed as causation is a recurring flag.

What the screen looks for

  • Concrete quantitative history with premium, exposure, claim, loss, or reserve data — which lines, which data, what you selected and why
  • Whether you can defend an assumption under follow-up rather than name a method
  • A working distinction between account-level underwriting judgment and portfolio-level actuarial analysis
  • Written clarity: rubric feedback has to be usable by researchers who are not actuaries

CAS credentials (ACAS, FCAS, or active exam progress), cat or capital modeling, rate filings, and SQL/R/Python are stated as bonuses, not gates.

Logistics

Fully remote and largely asynchronous, with live onboarding office hours and periodic calibration sessions you're expected to attend. Minimum 20 hours per week, ideally 40+. Pay is observed at roughly $800 per task and varies with task complexity and review outcomes; it is not a guaranteed rate. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis and the role starts immediately.
