What the work involves
You sit between a leading AI lab's research team and the messy reality of legal practice. Day to day that means three things: reviewing legal knowledge-work tasks and model responses for accuracy, completeness, and defensibility; authoring instruction specs and golden solutions that define what a correct answer actually looks like; and designing evaluation sets and benchmarks hard enough to show whether the model is genuinely improving rather than getting better at sounding lawyerly. A large share of the value is in written feedback — explaining why a memo's analysis is thin, which authority is stale, where a clause allocates risk in a way no client would sign.
Expect calibration work alongside researchers and experts in adjacent domains. Much of legal judgment is tacit, and the task here is to make it explicit and teachable: what a senior reviewer would flag, in what order, and why. You will use client-issued accounts and equipment and work inside the lab's own tooling.
What the platform screens for
- Verifiable seniority. A JD from an accredited school, 5+ years of substantive post-qualification practice at a firm, in-house department, regulator, or court, and clear progression to partner, counsel, of counsel, senior associate, senior in-house counsel, or GC. Clerkships and internships alone will not clear the bar.
- Real specialization. Depth in at least one practice area — corporate/transactional, litigation, regulatory and compliance, IP, employment and labor, or tax — probed with follow-up questions that reward specifics over summary.
- Active bar admission in at least one U.S. state, in good standing.
- Evaluation judgment. Hands-on use of LLMs in your own practice and a demonstrated ability to separate well-reasoned output from plausible-sounding error.
Logistics
This is not a remote role. It is a hybrid, Bay Area–based position requiring on-site presence with the client's team multiple days each week when needed; candidates outside the Bay Area must be willing to relocate at their own cost, with no relocation assistance. The commitment is 40 hours per week for an initial six-month engagement. Employment, onboarding, payroll, and benefits are administered by Cincinnatus LLC as employer of record — Mercor is the discovery platform, not the employer. The $100–150/hr band reflects rates observed on comparable senior legal listings and is not a guarantee of any individual offer.
