What the work actually involves

You receive batches of Tamil audio — recorded conversation, monologue, read speech, sometimes noisy field recordings — and produce transcripts that match a written spec. The spec matters more than your instincts: some tasks want verbatim output including false starts, fillers and repetitions; others want lightly cleaned readable text. You will also be asked to tag things the audio contains but the words don't carry: speaker changes, overlapping speech, laughter, code-switching into English, inaudible spans with timestamps. A second stream of work is review — reading someone else's transcript against the audio and correcting it without silently rewriting choices that were defensible.

The hard part is Tamil itself. Spoken Tamil diverges sharply from written Tamil, and a transcriber has to know which register the guidelines are asking for. Chennai, Madurai, Kongu, Jaffna and Malaysian Tamil speakers will all appear in a large corpus. Decisions about diglossia, transliteration of English loanwords, and spelling of colloquial contractions have to be made consistently across hundreds of files — inconsistency is what gets a batch rejected, not the occasional missed word.

What the screen looks for

micro1's process is AI-led and moves fast. Expect a conversational interview that probes real Tamil depth — dialect recognition, script and orthography questions, how you'd handle a specific ambiguous utterance — plus verification of any transcription work you claim. Vague claims about "strong language skills" collapse under follow-up; named projects, hours transcribed, tools used, and the actual style guides you worked to hold up. English proficiency is checked too, since guidelines, coordinator threads and flag notes are all in English.

Logistics

  • Fully remote, contractor engagement, invoiced hourly or per audio-minute depending on the project.
  • Largely asynchronous: assignments arrive with deadlines rather than fixed shifts, but coordinators expect responses within a working day.
  • You need your own quiet setup — reliable machine, decent headphones, stable internet for streaming audio.
  • Volume fluctuates with client demand; treat it as supplementary rather than guaranteed full-time load.
